By Sarah Dewberry | CNNAuthorities are investigating a Christmas Day swatting call at Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s residence in Rome, Georgia.Greene took to social media Monday morning, posting on X, “I was just swatted. This is like the 8th time. On Christmas with my family here.”On Monday, 911 dispatch informed officers that a call came through the suicide prevention hotline from a man possibly calling from Rome, New York, claiming he’d shot his girlfriend at Greene’s Georgia address, Rome, Georgia, police information specialist Kelly Madden told CNN on the phone. The caller also had threatened to kill himself.Rome Police informed Greene’s security team of the phone call while officers were en route to the home, according to Madden, and were told nothing was amiss at the home. Madden said officers were turned around before arriving at the house.“My local police are the GREATEST and shouldn’t have to deal with this,” Greene added in her post. “I appreciate them so much ...The right to protest is under threat in Britain

By Jill Lawless | Associated PressLONDON — For holding a sign outside a courthouse reminding jurors of their right to acquit defendants, a retiree faces up to two years in prison. For hanging a banner reading “Just Stop Oil” off a bridge, an engineer got a three-year prison sentence. Just for walking slowly down the street, scores of people have been arrested. They are among hundreds of environmental activists arrested for peaceful demonstrations in the U.K., where tough new laws restrict the right to protest. The Conservative government says the laws prevent extremist activists from hurting the economy and disrupting daily life. Critics say civil rights are being eroded without enough scrutiny from lawmakers or protection by the courts. They say the sweeping arrests of peaceful demonstrators, along with government officials labeling environmental activists extremists, mark a worrying departure for a liberal democracy.“Legitimate protest is part of what makes any cou...California is pressing universities to repatriate thousands of Native American remains and artifacts. When San Jose State anthropology professor Elizabeth Weiss tweeted a picture to celebrate returning to campus in September 2021, it caught the attention of Assemblymember James Ramos, a Democrat from San Bernardino and the Legislature’s first and only Native American member.“So happy to be back with some old friends,” read the caption of Weiss’ tweet, which included a photo of her holding the skull of a Native ancestor in front of boxes of other remains. For Ramos, a member of the San Manuel Indian Reservation’s Serrano/Cahuilla tribe, the caption was an example of the lack of respect for Native history in California. The boxes in the photograph’s background were a reminder of the vast collections of Native remains and artifacts still being held illegally in California’s public university systems. The post prompted Ramos to request an audit of the California State University’s repatriation progress — the act of institutions giving back remains and artifacts to Native tribes as require...High Surf Warning issued for Thursday along Bay Area coastline

Julie Treanor, the Navy’s director of Fleet Ordnance and Supply for the U.S. Fleet Forces Command, was promoted to rear admiral lower half during a ceremony at the USFF headquarters in Norfolk on Dec. 15.“It is a privilege to wear the cloth of this great Nation and my profound honor to lead some of America’s best and brightest in defense of our shared ideals,” Treanor said in a news release. “I am honored for this promotion and the opportunity to continue my military service.”A rear admiral generally commands a fleet of Navy ships, submarines and air wings and is the highest naval rank maintained during peacetime, as all higher ranks are temporary and linked to a specific position.Treanor is the daughter of retired Commander Richard Treanor and Sheila Treanor, who were longtime residents of Sterling Park from 1972-1994 and who, through their children, were active in the Sterling Park community and its various athletic programs.Treanor is one of se...Apple seeks a way in court to keep 2 of its best watches on shelves during bitter patent dispute

Apple filed an emergency motion seeking court permission to begin selling two of its most popular watches again until a final decision on its broader appeal in a bitter patent dispute is decided. The company cut off sales right before the Christmas holiday and in a motion filed Tuesday, Apple said it would suffer “irreparable harm” if previous court orders remain for the two weeks that it said the U.S. International Trade Commission will take to respond to its appeal.Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives estimates Apple’s holiday-season sales would be reduced by between $300 million and $400 million. On Oct. 26, the ITC determined that Apple infringed on two patents owned by Masimo Corp. and Cercacor Laboratories, both U.S. companies. After a 60-day review, the ITC’s decision became final Tuesday, but the company had already pulled the watches from store shelves and removed them from its online sales lineup. On Tuesday, United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai let the ITC ...Texans hope to get Stroud back when they host Tennessee on Sunday

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston lost for the second time in three games this past weekend and now the Texans must wait to see if star rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud can return Sunday to keep their dwindling playoff hopes alive. The Texans (8-7) suffered a 36-22 loss to Cleveland behind a subpar performance from Case Keenum in his second game filling in for Stroud, who sustained a concussion Dec. 10.Coach DeMeco Ryans said Stroud is improving and returned to team meetings late last week, but the second overall pick hasn’t practiced since he was injured against the Jets and it’s unclear if he will return Sunday against Tennessee. The Texans have the same record as AFC South foes Jacksonville and Indianapolis but are in third place because of a 2-2 division record. They remain in contention not only for a playoff spot but also the AFC South title with a visit to the Colts coming after Sunday’s visit from the Titans. But Ryans said they can’t worry about playoff scenarios unless they take care of t...Column: Tales from the PGA Tour in a year mostly about money and surprises

More than six months have passed since PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan of Saudi Arabia’s national wealth fund appeared publicly for the first time.It was in a television studio, not a federal courtroom. That was the first surprise. They spoke of a proposed business partnership, which no one saw coming because negotiations had been held in secret. Even now, no one is sure where it will lead. Tiger Woods used the word “murky” to describe how he envisioned the immediate future of golf’s landscape. As for the immediate past? Money was at the center of almost every conversation, from $20 million purses to how much it would take to lure a top player to LIV Golf ( Jon Rahm won’t say ).But the game marched on inside the ropes (too slowly for some) and provided new major champions, new stars and plenty of memories for this year’s version of “Tales from the Tour:”___The Genesis Invitational was the perfect place for a photo opportunity, and not just because Tiger W...Saleh, Douglas and Rodgers will be back, so focus turns on bouncing back next season for the Jets

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The focus now is on the future for the New York Jets. And it will include both Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas — and Aaron Rodgers — at least for one more year.Owner Woody Johnson’s endorsement of his coach and general manager to return for a do-over settled the Jets’ biggest question entering the final stretch of this season and the offseason. Johnson told the New York Post before the Jets’ 30-28 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday he already decided to keep both Saleh and Douglas moving forward.Johnson highlighted “some very positive moves” along with an improved culture and a strong defense, but also acknowledged “the offense needs a few pieces.”Rodgers’ return from a torn Achilles tendon is a major piece of that, of course. But this season has certainly been a painful reminder that one player can’t be the sole focus of a franchise.Saleh acknowledged Monday the Jets built this season’s roster around Rodgers’...Falcons’ successful switch to QB Heinicke may not help in decision on coach Smith

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons’ best offensive showing of the season may not provide much clarity in team owner Arthur Blank’s decision on coach Arthur Smith’s future.Smith’s third quarterback change of the season, benching Desmond Ridder for the second time and starting Taylor Heinicke in Sunday’s 29-10 win over the Indianapolis Colts, led to the offensive success. The Falcons (7-8) committed no turnovers and gained 406 yards while protecting their longshot playoff hopes.“It helps. He’s got a lot of experience, and you could feel it,” Smith said of Heinicke.Heinicke’s turnover-free game against the Colts prompts an obvious question: Would the Falcons be in better playoff position if the veteran had started the previous two games, devastating losses to Tampa Bay and Carolina?Ridder’s failure to show progress through his second season are negatives for Smith and his offensive staff. Opening the season with Ridder as the starter made...Latest news
