SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks on Monday signed forward Justin Bailey to a one-year, two-way contract, and added him to their 23-man roster, and placed winger Filip Zadina on injured reserve.Bailey was with the Sharks on Monday morning and will be available to play against the Washington Capitals at SAP Center.Zadina had been considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury as he missed Saturday’s game with the Vancouver Canucks. Zadina, per Sharks coach David Quinn, had been dealing with the injury for some time before he left Friday’s game with the Montreal Canadiens after one period.Zadina had three goals and two assists in 20 and was averaging 14:00 of ice time per game, and his plus-minus rating was an unsightly -19 mark.“Under the circumstances, he’s done a really good job,” Quinn said of Zadina on Saturday. “I think every player is trying to find out what they’re going to be in the National Hockey League. The early returns were promising

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mike Tomlin isn’t getting ahead of himself. And he probably shouldn’t.For all the good vibes — particularly on offense — generated by Sunday’s 16-10 win over Cincinnati, a game in which the Steelers topped 400 yards for the first time in more than three years and moved the ball at will, the reality is there was nowhere to go but up following Matt Canada’s abrupt firing last Tuesday.“I’m not trying to paint with a broad brush and act like: ‘Eureka!’” Tomlin said after Pittsburgh improved to 7-4 and vaulted to the top of the AFC wild-card race. “We did what we needed to do to win today and we’ll keep pushing.”It’s not just coach-speak. Yes, Pittsburgh looked like a competent and occasionally dangerous offense for a full 60 minutes, a rarity for a half-decade. Yet the Steelers also faced the NFL’s 30th-ranked defense and failed to deliver the knockout punch, needing an onside kick recovery at the two-minute warning to ex...Purdue back at No. 1 in AP Top 25, Arizona up to No. 2; ‘Nova, BYU, Colorado State jump into top 20

They beat Gonzaga, Tennessee and Marquette — three of the top 11 teams in the nation — in consecutive days, and that was enough to earn 60 of 63 first-place votes from the national panel of Top 25 voters. It took the Boilermakers until Dec. 12 to reach No. 1 last year, where they spent seven weeks over two different stints.“Our guys were resilient, I thought they hung in there, and I thought at times we didn’t play our best basketball in the three days, but I thought we played really hard,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said after the Maui Invitational. “We competed, and that is what you got to do. You got to just sometimes hang in there and just keep competing and make one more play.”Purdue replaced preseason No. 1 Kansas, which fell to fifth a...POLL ALERT: Purdue is back at No. 1 in the AP Top 25 men’s poll; Arizona, Marquette, UConn and Kansas round out top five
